Paid media audit checklist: what to check before increasing spend
Audit conversion tracking, search terms, creative, and lead quality before deciding where to put the next dollar of ad spend.
SHAL Media · Field notes
Before raising a budget, find out whether the account can tell you which campaigns produce sales or qualified leads. An audit should end with a short decision list: fix this, test this, and leave this alone until there is enough evidence.
Start with the conversion you buy
Place a test order or submit a test lead. Follow it from the landing page through analytics and into the CRM or order system. Check whether a refresh, duplicate tag, or repeated webhook counts the same action twice. Compare systems using a consistent date range and note differences in attribution and time zones.
Write down what each campaign optimizes for. If the account counts form opens and confirmed leads together, the reported cost per conversion can improve while the sales team sees fewer qualified prospects.
Inspect where the budget actually went
Export spend by campaign, geography, device, and landing page. In search campaigns, review the queries that triggered ads and identify themes that cannot turn into a sale. In paid social, group ads by message or offer so several edits of the same concept do not look like independent tests.
Turn findings into a decision
For each issue, record the evidence, an owner, and the next action. Repair measurement first. Then isolate one change with a clear outcome, such as qualified calls per dollar. Compare a cohort after it has had enough time to qualify. If tracking is the main issue, start with how to measure qualified leads .
